Reading a battle
Unit cards and battle callouts explain what is happening without formulas.

Unit cards#
A unit card describes a unit in words, for example:
Shield Guard — Healthy · Heavy Armor · Anti-Cavalry · Morale: Steady · Shield Wall
Health appears as a bar with a word such as Healthy, Wounded or Badly wounded. The detailed tooltip still gives exact health. Armor and counter roles are named rather than calculated. Morale appears as one of its bands.
Battle callouts#
During a fight, short callouts mark what just changed:
| Callout | Meaning |
|---|---|
| FLANKED | Attacked from the side |
| SURROUNDED | Attacked by several enemies from different directions |
| GIVING GROUND | Pressed hard, the unit falls back a short way |
| SHAKEN, WAVERING | Morale is falling; Wavering always comes before a break |
| ROUTING | The unit has broken and is fleeing |
| INSPIRED | Morale is unusually high after a success |
| CHARGING | Cavalry is making a Lance Charge |
| DISORDERED | Pursuers lost their formation chasing a feigned retreat |
| EXPOSED | Disordered troops were caught when the retreat turned |
| HIGH GROUND | Fighting from a hill |
| FORMATION DISRUPTED | Terrain or a choke has broken the formation |
| CAUGHT IN COLUMN | Attacked while still in March Column |
| BEING PILLAGED | Raiders are stealing from one of your buildings |
| LOOT DROPPED | A raider died and left its loot behind |
Important callouts also play a sound and show a caption. Each uses a symbol and text, never color alone.
