Doctrines
Three either-or choices decide what kind of civilization you become in a match.
One choice per age#
Each time you reach a new age, you can research one of two doctrines at your Town Hall. Choosing one permanently closes the other.
| Age reached | Doctrine | Choose one |
|---|---|---|
| Territorial | Economic | Agrarian Expansion or Commercial Expansion |
| Kingdom | Military | Discipline or Mobility |
| High Medieval | Warfare | Siege Warfare or Fortification |
If you cancel before the research finishes, you get the ordinary refund and both options return.
What doctrines change#
Doctrines change how you play, not only your statistics. They affect things such as how quickly formations deploy, how much raiders carry, how cheap roads are, how hard siege shakes defenders and how strong fortifications are.
Learning a rival's doctrines#
Doctrines are not announced. An Envoy House with a growing network of informants can learn them. Everyone's choices appear in the replay after the match.
